The Vietnam War
America's war in Vietnam was an extension or manifestation of the Cold War and our war against communism and Soviet political and strategic reach. Started in 1954 with what seemed to be admirable intentions, the "American War" or "the War against Americans to save the nation" (so called by the North) pitted the unnaturally divided country against itself and the United States. In a prolonged, unpopular and ultimately disastrous war that ended many a political career and raised significant doubt about the intentions of the U.S. government and it's capability, the war came to an embarrassing and tragic end by 1974.
