Music & Drug Culture

LSD

LSD was a drug used by all types of people in the 60’s- allowing them an escape from the real world. Some also used the drug to enhance the experience of events such as concerts, sporting events, and other performances. This drug is a symbol of rebellious 50’s children and their yearning for life outside the suburbs.

"LSD is a psychedelic drug which occasionally causes psychotic behavior in people who have NOT taken it.”
                           ― Timothy Leary

Marijuana

Marijuana was the most commonly used drug in the 60’s. It was all over the country in the 60’s and created an epidemic for politicians and parents alike. This carried over for decades, and one could even argue that drugs were the reason that Ronald Reagan was elected.
Raegan speaks on drug use in the U.S, and the war on drugs.

Drugs Influence on Music

  • The Grateful Dead- “Drivin’ that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones you better watch your speed”
  • The Grateful Dead- “I was having a high time, living the good life”
  • Jimi Hendrix- Purple Haze all in my brain, Lately things don't seem the same, Actin' funny but I don't know why, Excuse me while I kiss the sky.
  • These lyrics would allow kids to escape to the world that they viewed as perfect. High on weed or LSD with no cares in the world. This also made kids want to be like Jimi, so naturally, they tried these types of drugs.
